Embark on the Gasherbrum II Expedition 2025/2026, an exhilarating adventure in the legendary Karakoram Range, one of the most extreme and captivating mountaineering regions on Earth. Standing tall at 8,035 meters, Gasherbrum II (G2) is the thirteenth-highest mountain in the world and the second-highest peak in the Gasherbrum Massif, following Gasherbrum I (G1).
The name Gasherbrum comes from the ancient Balti language, where “Rgasha” means “beautiful” and “Brum” means “mountain.” Together, they form the phrase “Beautiful Mountain.” However, British surveyor Thomas George Montgomerie designated it as “K4” in 1856 during The Great Trigonometric Survey of India, marking it as the fourth identified peak in the Karakoram Range.
Nestled on the border between Gilgit-Baltistan (Pakistan) and Xinjiang (China), Gasherbrum II offers awe-inspiring views and an unforgettable experience for mountaineers around the globe.
The Gasherbrum Massif was first explored in 1934 by a Swiss-led international team under Günter Oskar Dyhrenfurth, though the group couldn’t summit G1 or G2.
The first successful ascent of Gasherbrum II took place on July 7, 1956, when Fritz Moravec, Josef Larch, and Hans Willenpart from Austria reached the summit despite facing avalanches and food shortages. Their bravery and determination established G2 as one of the most accessible eight-thousanders in mountaineering history.
IAdding to its legacy, Cory Richards, Denis Urubko, and Simone Moro completed the first winter ascent of Gasherbrum II in 2011, conquering the mountain without porters or supplemental oxygen, even after surviving a massive avalanche — a truly remarkable achievement.
The best season to climb Gasherbrum II (G2) is summer, particularly during Jun,July and August, when temperatures are relatively warmer and weather conditions more predictable. These months provide the most favorable window for reaching the summit, while winter climbs remain highly technical and dangerous due to extreme cold and strong winds.
